We need ideas, not just landfill oppositionPolitical posturing does little to solve waste disposal messBY RANDALL DENLEY, THE OTTAWA CITIZEN APRIL 25, 2010 Mayor Larry O'Brien has seldom been accused of acting too much like a politician, but his declaration of war on the Carp Road landfill expansion is pure politics. It will do nothing more than create a show for people who oppose the landfill and it falls far short of the fact-based analysis one would expect from a business guy. It's not even environmentally sound. About 70 per cent of Ottawa's total garbage comes from the industrial, commercial and institutional sectors. Right now, there is no significant facility for handling that garbage in Ottawa; the city's Trail Road landfill largely takes residential garbage. Waste Management's Carp Road site used to do the job, but the company powered down its operations and delayed expansion plans after outcry over what locals like to call Carp Mountain.
